Savannah River SiteA report released by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Board shows that SRS needs better preparation for natural disaster response. The report shows that the number of natural disaster drills at the site have been declining.

Savannah River SiteThe US Department of Homeland Security is currently testing a boat-based system for detecting radiological threats in US waters. These tests are being conducted at L-Lake in the Savannah River Site.

SREL Co-Director Asked to Resign

Savannah River SiteCarl Strojan, who was the Assistant Director of SREL until this past June, has been asked to resign by UGA VP for Research David Lee. Lee has stated, "We're in a position now where we really don't need two directors. Carl Bergmann can now handle all the activities."

Contrary to Rumor, Lab Animals at SREL Will Not Be Euthanized

Savannah River SiteApparently after several SREL employees were laid off, a rumor that some of the lab animals would need to be euthanized began to spread. According to Professor Whit Gibbons, this simply is not true. As Gibbons said, "That's really the message I think, is no. We do not have to euthanize any of these animals."

More Plutonium to be Converted, MOX Program Pushes Forward

Savannah River SiteThe Energy Department stated this past week its intention to convert additional plutonium, beyond the 34 tons they've previously stated, into commercial reactor fuel. Although no specific numbers were given when asked about the amount of plutonium, Thomas D'Agostino said, "It will be significant."

SREL Scheduled to Close July 2008

Savannah River SiteUniversity of Georgia President Michael Adams has stated in a letter, dated June 15th, 2007, that he intends to cease funding to and close the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory within one year. An estimated 40 SREL employees will be terminated by June 30th, 2007, with six faculty being relocated from SREL to the Athens campus.
